Want to Make Ice Lollies or Frozen Yoghurts?

No problem! Head over to our article – Chill Out with Homemade Frozen Yoghurts: Easy Recipes and Tips – for ideas, tips and tricks for making these delicious treats.

You’ll need a few extras, and we’ve listed them below with useful links:

  • Ice Lolly Moulds: Ice lolly moulds come in various shapes and sizes, and they are perfect for creating frozen yoghurt lollies. Choose moulds that are easy for little hands to hold and release the lollies easily once they are frozen.

  • Plastic Squeeze Bottles: These bottles are fantastic for drizzling sauces, adding fruit purees, or creating colourful swirls in the frozen yoghurt. Kids will love using them to add their unique touch to the lollies.

  • Toppings Galore: Set up a toppings station with a variety of sprinkles, crushed nuts, fresh fruits, chocolate chips, and other favourite toppings. This allows kids to customise their frozen yoghurt lollies to their liking.

  • Mixing Bowls:  If you’re preparing different flavoured yoghurt bases or toppings, you’ll need mixing bowls and whisks for the kids to create their masterpieces.

  • Whisks: You’ll need whisks to mix all your combined ingredients to ensure everything is properly incorporated.

  • Aprons: Making frozen yoghurt lollies can get a little messy, so consider providing aprons for the kids to wear.

  • Transporting your Ice Creams: There have been many occasions where I have made a batch of ice creams for family events, or friend’s parties and have needed to transport pots of Ice Creams. Now, fortunately, I live in the UK, so we’ll rarely have sweltering ice cream melting temperatures, however, if you are lucky enough to enjoy warmer climates, then you may require a food-safe container for transportation, much like the bags you’ll see Deliveroo or Uber eats using. They generally can keep food hot and/or cold.

The Role of Colour in Ice Cream

What do you need to make Homemade Ice Cream? image 9 jpeg pink banana pink background frosted fusionsWe eat with our eyes first, and we are naturally drawn to visually appealing foods and ice cream is no exception. The enticing colours of classic flavours like strawberry, chocolate, and mint green set a standard in our minds, and we subconsciously anticipate these colours when presented with these well-loved flavours.

A rich yellow mango sorbet or mint-green scoop can instantly trigger a craving, even before the first bite.

Something you’ll find with Homemade Ice Cream is that some ingredients don’t produce the colour we expect. Take bananas, for example – once ripe (and sweetest!), they may turn your ice cream a little beige.

That’s where natural food colourings come in.

What Equipment Do You Need To Make Homemade Ice Cream Apr25 update image 10 natural food colourings Frosted Fusions

Used thoughtfully, they can elevate the appeal of your ice creams without compromising their integrity.

🍌 Fun Fact:

We once made banana ice cream using red (paprika-based) colouring – people thought it was strawberry! Proof that colour can completely shift expectations.

Experimentation Is Part of the Fun

Don’t be afraid to:

  • Try new mix-ins
  • Play with colours and textures
  • Make the odd mistake – it’s how the best flavour combos are born

The more you practice, the more confident you’ll become – and before you know it, you’ll be the go-to ice cream maker for every occasion.

    • Hey Kiersti,

Thanks for your comment, really glad you appreciated our guide, hints and tips.

Our hope is to inspire everyone to get in the kitchen and rustle up some delicious homemade ice creams that are both delicious and healthy and so we wanted to share our experiences as much as we can.

What inspired me? Hmm, think it came from my kids, managing their food challenges of textures, colours, taste etc, and wanting above all to be able to create wholesome foods, free from preservatives and additives that really got me on this path.

Add to that, my experimental mind and I started combining flavours that perhaps shouldn’t be put together to see if they’d work. Between you and I – some did not! Haha.

However, many have! Like our Bacon and Maple Syrup Ice Cream, that is an absolute winner in both flavour and texture, or there’s our Beetroot Ice Cream which is earthy and sweet, quite unexpectedly good! Flavours that you wouldn’t think to pair with ice cream that actually work. I love the fusions!

Got a couple of new ones I’m working on, that I am looking forward to testing, hopefully perfecting and adding here soon.

If you do check these out and give any of our fusion ice creams a go, we’d love to hear how you get on and what you think of them.

Thanks again for dropping by Kiersti.

      All the very best

      Cherie :o)

  5. Wow so much to look at and then read! Who can’t resist a good ice cream from time to time, even on my diet I leave a little space for some ice cream as a special treat. The possibilities of trying some ones home made versions sounds enticing.

Color and taste and perception, you are right in what you suggest, but the part of the banana we eat and taste is not really yellow is it? like you say our minds have been taught to see it and expect it that way.

If you bought all the equipment it seems like it could get a little expensive, and you would need quite some space to store your equipment and some raw products.

A great informative post. Thank You

    • Hey Robby,

Thanks for checking in, really glad to hear that you enjoyed our article. And it’s very good to hear that you leave a little space for ice cream! There’s always space for ice cream, lol.

Indeed, colour, taste and perception play a huge role in our relationship with food, as the old adage goes, we eat with our eyes.

As detailed in our article, most kitchens will have most of the standard pieces of equipment required to make homemade ice cream. Still, we’ve listed everything possible, even down to storage and transportation of ice cream, along with useful links to make it easy for our readers who might find they are missing the odd utensil.

Once again, thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.

      Wishing you all the best

      Cherie :o)

  6. Absolutely love this post! ???? There’s something so special about making your own ice cream at home — it’s creative, fun, and always tastes better when you’ve put love (and maybe a few extra choc chips) into it! I didn’t realise how simple it could be with the right tools — definitely inspired to give it a go. I’ve been thinking about trying some dairy-free recipes too, so this guide is super helpful. Thanks for breaking it all down so clearly — time to grab an ice cream maker and get experimenting! What’s everyone’s favourite homemade flavour combo?

    • Hi Naresh,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment, we’re so glad to hear you’re feeling inspired to dive into the wonderful (and delicious!) world of homemade ice cream!

There’s definitely something magical about creating it yourself — especially when a few extra choc chips sneak their way in (no judgment here, we fully support generous mix-ins! ????).

We’re glad the guide helped demystify the equipment side of things — once you’ve got the basics, the possibilities really are endless.

Dairy-free recipes are such a great option too — creamy coconut milk, nut-based blends, or even oat milk can create amazing textures and flavours. If you’re interested, we’ve got some brilliant dairy-free articles you can check out – this one here focuses on coconut milk in ice cream – Vegan And Dairy-Free Homemade Ice Cream Using Coconut Milk.

As for favourite combos? Ooh, tough one — but right now we’re obsessed with pistachio and cardamom, it’s an amazing combo, or mango and toasted coconut for something tropical. How about you?

Happy experimenting — and do let us know what flavour you end up trying first!

      All the best,
      Cherie
