Coffee Beans: The Heart of Every Brew

When it comes to crafting the perfect cup of coffee, it all starts with the humble coffee bean.

These small, unassuming seeds are the heart and soul of your daily brew, carrying a world of flavour and aroma within their delicate shells.

The Perfect Brew Homemade Coffee Ice Cream image 2 pile of coffee beans white background frosted fusionsCoffee beans are typically sourced from two main species: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are known for their smooth, nuanced flavours and are often considered the premium choice. They thrive at higher altitudes in regions with cooler temperatures.

On the other hand, Robusta beans are hardier, with a stronger, more bitter taste. They’re often used in espresso blends for that extra kick.

The process from coffee beans to your morning cuppa involves several intricate steps, each contributing to the final flavour profile.

It all begins with cultivation, as coffee plants are grown in tropical regions around the world. Once the coffee cherries are ripe for picking, they undergo a meticulous process of harvesting, drying, and milling to extract the precious beans within.

Afterwards, the beans embark on a journey of roasting, where they’re exposed to carefully controlled heat levels that bring out their unique flavours. The roasting process is an art in itself, with variations in temperature and time leading to a diverse range of coffee flavours, from light and fruity to dark and robust.

From there, the freshly roasted beans are ground to the desired consistency, whether it’s for an espresso, drip coffee, or a French press.

Now, it’s time to brew. This is where hot water meets ground coffee to make a delicious cup of coffee.

Whether it’s a simple black coffee or a fancy cappuccino, the quality of coffee beans and how each step is followed are vital for a great coffee experience.

Coffee’s Wide Range of Flavours

Coffee comes in many delicious flavours, and each blend has a unique taste.

You can enjoy dark roast for a bold and strong flavour, medium roast for a milder, nutty taste, or try out the richness of mocha, the fruity hints of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, or the smoky notes of French roast.

Whether you like a classic cup or want something deeper and richer, there are many coffee options to try.

As we talk about making homemade coffee ice cream, you’ll see there are endless possibilities to enjoy the flavours of your favourite brew.

Ingredients:

For the Coffee Ice Cream Base:

  • 300ml double cream
  • 300ml whole milk
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee granules (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Prepare the Coffee Mixture:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine 300ml of double cream and 300ml of whole milk.
    • Add 100g of caster sugar and mix until the sugar is fully dissolved.
    • In a separate small bowl, dissolve 2 tablespoons of instant coffee granules in a small amount of hot water, creating a strong coffee concentrate.
    • Add the coffee concentrate to the cream and milk mixture, stirring until well combined.
    • Finally, stir in 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract to enhance the flavour.
  • Chill the Mixture:
    • Cover the bowl with cling film or a lid and refrigerate the coffee mixture for at least 2 hours or until it’s thoroughly chilled. Chilling the mixture ensures a smoother texture during churning.
  • Churn the Coffee Ice Cream:
    • Pour the chilled coffee mixture into an ice cream maker.
    • Churn the mixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency. This usually takes about 20-25 minutes.
      • NB: If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can still make this recipe. Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and freeze. Every 30 minutes, stir the mixture vigorously with a fork to break up any ice crystals that may be forming, repeating this process for about 3-4 hours or until the ice cream is firm. Please also check out our post – Homemade Ice Cream: Without an Ice Cream Maker – to learn more tips and tricks.
  • Transfer and Freeze:
    • Transfer the churned coffee ice cream into an airtight container.
    • Smooth the surface with a spatula to create an even layer.
    • Place a piece of parchment paper directly on the surface of the ice cream to prevent ice crystals from forming.
    • Seal the container with an airtight lid and freeze for at least 4 hours or until the coffee ice cream is firm.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
    • Scoop out the coffee ice cream into bowls or cones.
    • Garnish with chocolate shavings, crushed coffee beans, or a drizzle of caramel sauce if desired.
    • Enjoy your homemade coffee ice cream!

Feel free to adjust the amount of instant coffee granules to your taste preference for a stronger or milder coffee flavour.

  1. You have woken the Chef in me up! Two of my favorite things in one recipe! I am a die-hard coffee drinker and who doesn’t love a great milkshake or ice cream?

I love that your recipe is super easy to follow and your ingredients are all with quality in mind. I am a Robusta coffee fan, I love the dark bitter chocolatey hues it can provide.

I generally drink my coffee black, but when I enjoy an iced coffee, that is when I add flavors, so the ice cream will be perfect for me!

I agree with you on coffee being a somewhat healthy beverage, especially when enjoyed with no additives. Whenever you add sugar to pretty much anything you deteriorate the healthy benefits rapidly as processed sugar is really not that good for you.

Thanks for this great recipe, I intend on enjoying a batch of Coffee truffle I believe is the flavor I am going to attempt.
