A Slice of History: Neapolitan Ice Cream’s Origins
Neapolitan Ice Cream’s story is one of innovation and creativity.
It traces its roots back to the late 19th century in Italy, where inventive gelato makers wanted to offer a unique, multi-flavoured treat. The name ‘Neapolitan’ is derived from Naples, the city where this trio of flavours first gained popularity.
These early artisans, inspired by the Italian flag’s colours, crafted layers of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry gelato, presenting a dessert that was as visually appealing as it was delicious.
Though it is believed that originally, Neapolitan ice cream featured a different combination of flavours: pistachio, chocolate, and vanilla.
It wasn’t until it made its way to the United States that the iconic chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry trio became the standard.
Through the years, Neapolitan ice cream has gained global popularity thanks to its blend of favourite flavours and nostalgic appeal.
It’s more than a treat; it’s a nostalgic journey through history.

Hey Pablo,
Thanks for your comment,
Really glad you appreciated our article highlighting the classic that is Neopolitan Ice Cream.
Ice Cream has a very ‘cool’ history; the earliest known ‘ice cream desserts’ were as early as 70 B.C, but these were merely ice and flavourings, not the Creamy, Luxurious Ice Creams that we know today, thanks to the vast evolution through the years.
If you ever give this recipe a try, we would love to hear how you get on.

Hey, who would have thought that Neopolitan Ice Cream would have been invented in the 19th Century?
As I get older, I become more of a Ice Cream guy. Neopolitan is a solid choice for ice cream because the best flavors for sure are chocolate and strawberry.
One thing I have never tried is an ice cream cone with Neapolitan Ice Cream. It sounds pretty good.
I also love the price of this Ice Cream, because I like to buy the big Ice Creams and I have sometimes seen Neopolitan Ice creams for good prices.
Anyway, cool post on a cool Ice Cream. Thanks.
Hey Jake,

Ice Cream as we know it today has evolved a great deal, and far earlier than the 19th Century. Original ‘ice cream desserts’ were first enjoyed as early as 70 B.C! Check out our article – Which Country Invented Ice Cream – for more details.
