Chocolate is Good for you!
It’s good news after all, indulging in the rich, velvety goodness of chocolate isn’t just a delicious experience for your taste buds – it can also offer surprising health benefits.
Dark chocolate, in particular, is full of antioxidants, like flavonoids and polyphenols, which have been linked to various health perks. These compounds can help combat oxidative stress, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases and supporting heart health.
Chocolate has been found to have a positive impact on mood, thanks to its potential to stimulate the production of serotonin – a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of happiness and well-being.
Chocolate might even offer a touch of relaxation by reducing cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. In addition, the flavonoids in chocolate have been connected to improved cognitive function, potentially aiding in better memory and focus.
Moderation is key, though, as chocolate is energy-dense. You’re better off opting for dark chocolate with a higher cocoa content, as it typically contains fewer added sugars.
So keep in mind – while savouring the velvety treat of homemade chocolate ice cream, you’re also treating yourself to a range of potential health benefits – a truly delicious win-win situation!
Naturally, moderation is key and of course, Chocolate is not a ‘health food’, however, it does have some positives and with the list of the health benefits that chocolate has to offer, we think it would be rude not to take advantage of goodness chocolate has to offer!
Let’s see how we can make this decadent, healthy homemade ice cream dessert.
Decadent, truly irresistible, Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream Recipe
Here’s an easy-to-follow recipe for you to try out:
Ingredients:
- 250ml double cream
- 125ml whole milk
- 80g granulated sugar
- 60g unsweetened cocoa powder
- Pinch of salt
- 115g dark chocolate, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat once it’s hot, but not boiling.
- Add the finely chopped dark chocolate to the hot mixture. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the double cream and vanilla extract together.
- Gradually whisk the cream mixture into the chocolate mixture until well combined.
- Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. Chilling the mixture thoroughly will help develop the flavours.
- Once chilled, give the mixture a good stir and then pour it into an ice cream maker.
- Churn the mixture in the ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft, creamy consistency.
- NB: If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can still make this recipe. Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and freeze. Every 30 minutes, stir the mixture vigorously with a fork to break up ice crystals, repeating this process for about 3-4 hours or until the ice cream is firm. Please also check out our post – Homemade Ice Cream: Without an Ice Cream Maker to learn more.
- Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for an additional 2-4 hours, or until firm.
- Serve the homemade chocolate ice cream in bowls or cones and enjoy the decadent and creamy treat!
You can also add mix-ins like chopped nuts, additional chocolate shavings, or chocolate chips to add an extra texture to your smooth, creamy decadent homemade chocolate ice cream, which you can add in the last few minutes of churning.
Feel free to get creative and adjust the recipe to your taste preferences. Homemade chocolate ice cream is a classic favourite that’s sure to satisfy any chocolate lover’s cravings!
Note: If you prefer a more intense chocolate flavour, you can use Dutch-processed cocoa powder (see below).

Known as alkalized cocoa powder, Dutch-processed cocoa powder is treated with an alkaline solution to neutralize its acidity. This process offers several benefits that make it a popular choice for baking and cooking:
- Milder Flavour: Dutch-processed cocoa powder has a milder and smoother flavour compared to natural cocoa powder. The alkalisation process reduces the sharp and acidic taste often associated with natural cocoa, resulting in a more balanced and less intense chocolate flavour.
- Improved Solubility: The alkalisation process also increases the cocoa powder’s solubility in liquids, making it easier to incorporate into recipes. This leads to smoother mixtures and less likelihood of forming lumps.
- Enhanced Colour: Dutch-processed cocoa powder tends to have a darker and richer colour compared to natural cocoa powder. This can contribute to a more appealing appearance in baked goods, ice creams, and other desserts.
- Reduced Bitterness: The alkalization process helps to reduce the bitterness of cocoa powder. This is especially beneficial in recipes that call for a higher proportion of cocoa, as it can help achieve a more balanced and palatable flavour.
- More Predictable Results: The consistent and controlled pH level achieved through alkalization makes Dutch-processed cocoa powder more reliable in recipes. It interacts more predictably with other ingredients, ensuring consistent results.
It’s important to note that while Dutch-processed cocoa powder has these advantages, it may not be suitable for all recipes. Some recipes, especially those that rely on the natural acidity of cocoa for leavening, may specifically call for natural cocoa powder. Choosing between the two types of cocoa powder depends on the desired flavour, colour, and overall outcome of the recipe.
