What’s the Deal with Vegan Nutella?

Ferrero’s newest plant-based version of the beloved spread has hit Amazon and Sainsbury’s shelves — and yes, it’s already been dubbed “better than the original” by early reviewers.
Instead of dairy, it blends in chickpeas and rice syrup (we know, sounds weird – but trust the process), alongside the classic cocoa and roasted hazelnuts we know and love.
It’s silky. It’s chocolatey. And best of all? It finally opens the door for vegan Nutella ice cream lovers everywhere.

This article was a delightful read! I was intrigued to learn about the new plant-based Nutella hitting the shelves in the UK. The idea of using chickpeas and rice syrup as alternatives to dairy is fascinating, and it’s impressive how the taste remains so close to the original. Your suggestions for incorporating this vegan spread into various recipes, especially the no-churn ice cream, have me excited to experiment in the kitchen. Do you have any tips for enhancing the flavor profile when making homemade vegan Nutella? Thanks for sharing these innovative ideas!
Hi Bob,
Nice to hear from you again, and thank you for such a thoughtful comment!
It’s exciting to see a vegan version of Nutella finally making its way into mainstream shelves here in the UK, and like you, we were intrigued by the chickpea and rice syrup combo too. It’s clever how close they’ve come to the original in both texture and taste.
When it comes to enhancing the flavour profile of homemade vegan Nutella, we’ve found a few little touches can make a big difference. A tiny splash of espresso or strong brewed coffee brings out the depth of the cocoa, while a pinch of sea salt really elevates the sweetness and nuttiness.
Roasting the hazelnuts a bit longer (until they’re deeply golden) also gives that extra-rich, toasty flavour that’s oh-so satisfying.
And of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, a swirl of vanilla bean paste or even a touch of cinnamon can add a lovely twist, especially when turning it into ice cream!
We’re glad you’re feeling inspired to experiment. Please do let us know how your kitchen adventures go.
Thanks once again for dropping by.
All the best,
Cherie
What a great article. At my age, I am more cautious of what foods I am eating. Although I try to eat more healthy foods, I’m not always successful. Nutella looks like a great product, but then I read in your post about chickpeas and rice syrup… those two don’t seem to go together to me but you say to trust the process. I just may have to give Nutella a try!
Hi Wayne,
Thanks so much for your comment, really glad you found the article great, thank you.
It’s always lovely to hear from readers who are on the journey of finding that sweet spot between health and indulgence (aren’t we all, really?), and ice cream isn’t often top of the healthy lists.
We totally get the hesitation, chickpeas and rice syrup don’t exactly scream dessert at first glance! But yes, trust the process is definitely the motto here.
The secret lies in how these ingredients come together to recreate the creamy richness of the original Nutella, without the dairy or refined sugars. It’s a great option for when you’re craving a treat but trying to make more mindful choices. And once you blend that into a batch of ice cream… well, let’s just say you might not miss the original after all!
Our article – An Earth Day-Inspired Zero-Waste Homemade Sweet Potato Ice Cream – is another example of using an ingredient, in this instance, the humble spud, and reimagining it into something both healthy and delicious, proving that even the most obscure ingredients can surprise us.
If you do give the Nutella a go, we’d love to hear what you think, especially if you decide to experiment with the no-churn recipes we’ve included.
Once again, thank you for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.
All the best,
Cherie
