Halloween, A Spooky Celebration of Excitement and Fun
Rooted in ancient Celtic traditions, Halloween has evolved into a celebration filled with playful fear, where people of all ages embrace the supernatural and the mysterious. From haunted houses to horror movie marathons, this holiday provides a space for fun and creativity.
However, one of the most exciting aspects of Halloween is the abundance of sweet treats, particularly the tradition of turning everyday snacks into spooky delights.
As autumn truly sets in, pumpkins glow with carved faces, cobwebs adorn porches, and the air is filled with the scent of bonfires, warm spices and candy. Halloween treats—like caramel apples, candy corn, and chocolate bars – become the heart of festive gatherings and parties.
These treats, with a little imagination, can be transformed into spine-chilling creations: Halloween-themed ice creams, or as we like to call them, “Ice Screams.”
Traditional Halloween Treats Transformed Into Spooky Ice Screams
Halloween treats have always been a central part of the celebration, ranging from classic caramel-dipped apples, aka Toffee Apples, to bowls of multi-coloured candy corn. And gladly, many of these festive favourites can be creatively transformed into chilling ice cream concoctions.
Here are some traditional treats and how they can be incorporated into homemade Halloween ice creams:
- Candy Corn: This iconic Halloween candy can be layered into vanilla or pumpkin-flavoured ice cream to add pops of bright orange, yellow, and white.
- Pumpkin Spice: A favourite autumn flavour, pumpkin spice can be added to ice cream bases to create a creamy, rich pumpkin pie ice cream.
- Chocolate Brownies: Dense and fudgy, brownies make the perfect mix-in for “graveyard” ice creams, paired with gummy worms for that extra spooky touch.
- Caramel Apples: Caramel swirled into apple-flavoured ice cream brings the familiar autumnal taste of caramel-dipped toffee apples.
- Halloween Oreos: Crushed Halloween-themed Oreos add both flavour and a festive black-and-orange colour scheme to your ice cream.
These transformations bring a new level of fun to Halloween desserts, ensuring that both kids and adults alike can enjoy a sweet, spooky treat.

Witches’ Brew Homemade Bubblegum-flavoured Ice Scream
With green food colouring, topped with jelly eyeballs (No churn)—perfect for Halloween!
Of the recipes and flavour combinations listed above., this recipe has to be one of our favourites. Always a winner with the kids, for both the flavour and the look.
This no-churn ice cream is perfect for Halloween and will add a fun, spooky twist to your celebrations, plus it’s super easy to make!
Below is our recipe and method:
Ingredients
- 600ml double cream (or whipping cream)
- 400g sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1-2 drops bubblegum flavouring (adjust for taste)
- Green food colouring (gel works best for a vibrant colour)
- Jelly eyeballs (available from most confectioners or online)
Method
- Prepare the Ice Cream Base:
- In a large mixing bowl, pour the double cream and whisk using an electric mixer until soft peaks form. You want the cream to be thick but not too stiff.
- In a separate bowl, mix the sweetened condensed milk with the vanilla extract, bubblegum flavouring, and a few drops of green food colouring until fully combined. Adjust the bubblegum flavouring based on your taste preference.
- Combine the Ingredients:
- Slowly fold the sweetened condensed milk mixture into the whipped cream, using a spatula. Be gentle to maintain the light, airy texture of the cream.
- Continue folding until the mixture is evenly coloured and well combined. If the green isn’t vibrant enough, add an extra drop of food colouring and stir carefully.
- Freeze the Ice Cream:
- Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container and smooth the top.
- Cover the container with cling film or a lid, then freeze for at least 6 hours (overnight is best) until fully set.
- Add the Spooky Ghoulish Touches:
- Once the ice cream is ready, scoop it into bowls or cones.
- Top with jelly eyeballs to give it that spooky, ghoulish effect!
Tips
- Serving Idea: If you’re serving this at a party, consider adding a drizzle of raspberry sauce for a “blood” effect.
- Storage: This no-churn ice cream can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. Be sure to let it soften slightly before serving for the best texture.

Note: This ice cream is high in calories and fat due to the double cream and condensed milk. It’s also high in sugar, so it should be enjoyed in moderation.
Dairy-Free Adaptation
To make this recipe dairy-free, replace the double cream and condensed milk with plant-based alternatives:
- Instead of double cream, use 600ml of full-fat coconut cream or a thick cashew cream.
- Replace condensed milk with 400ml of dairy-free condensed coconut milk (available in most supermarkets) or make your own by simmering coconut milk with sugar until reduced and thickened.
- The rest of the ingredients remain the same.
Note: The texture may be slightly different, but it will still be creamy and delicious. You might need to adjust the freezing time as plant-based ice creams can freeze harder than dairy versions.
Spooky Blood Orange Sorbet
Our blood orange sorbet is a refreshing, tart Halloween treat – perfectly using vibrant Halloween colours!
Here’s our recipe and method:
Ingredients
- 500ml fresh blood orange juice (about 6-8 blood oranges)
- 100g caster sugar
- 100ml water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional, for extra tartness)
- Zest of 1 blood orange (optional, for more intense flavour)
Method
- Prepare the Simple Syrup:
- In a small saucepan, combine the caster sugar and water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally until the sugar is fully dissolved, creating a simple syrup. Allow it to cool completely.
- Juice the Blood Oranges:
- While the syrup cools, juice the blood oranges to extract 500ml of fresh juice. Strain the juice through a sieve to remove any pulp or seeds for a smooth texture. If you prefer a more tart sorbet, you can add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to balance the sweetness.
- Mix the Ingredients:
- Once the syrup is cool, stir it into the blood orange juice. If you’re using the zest, add it now for a more intense blood orange flavour. Mix well until fully combined.
- Chill the Mixture:
- Pour the mixture into a container and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to ensure it’s very cold before freezing.
- Freeze the Sorbet:
- If you have an ice cream maker, churn the chilled mixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a smooth, sorbet consistency.
- If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe container. Place it in the freezer, and after 30 minutes, stir the mixture with a fork to break up any ice crystals. Repeat this process every 30 minutes for about 3 hours until the sorbet is smooth and frozen.
- Serve and Enjoy:
- Once the sorbet is fully frozen, scoop it into bowls or cones. For a spooky Halloween touch, you can garnish it with edible black sprinkles or dark chocolate shards to mimic “bat wings.”

Note: This sorbet is fat-free and lower in calories compared to ice cream. It’s high in vitamin C due to the blood oranges, but also high in sugar, so portion control is recommended.
Storage
Keep the sorbet in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. Allow it to soften slightly at room temperature before serving.
This Blood Orange Sorbet is perfect for a refreshing, tangy, and visually striking dessert at your Halloween party!
Dietary Adaptations
This recipe is naturally dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free, making it suitable for many dietary restrictions.
However, here are some additional adaptations you might want to consider:
- For a lower sugar option, replace half of the caster sugar with a sugar substitute like stevia or erythritol. Be aware that this may affect the texture slightly.
- If blood oranges aren’t available or suitable, you can use regular oranges and add a few drops of natural red food colouring for a similar effect.
Halloween Toppings to Add Extra Spookiness
To further enhance the Halloween theme, toppings play a crucial role in turning ordinary ice cream into a ghoulish spooky treat!
We’ve listed below a selection of creepy toppings you can add:
- Gummy Worms and Spiders: Add a “creepy-crawly” effect to ice cream, perfect for a graveyard-themed dessert.
- Candy Eyes: These edible eyes bring your ice cream creations to life, whether scattered on top or hidden within.
- Crushed Cookies and Crumbs: Use crushed chocolate cookies to create a dirt-like effect for “monster” or “zombie” ice cream themes.
- Red Gel or Raspberry Sauce: Drizzle over ice cream to create a “bloody” effect—great for vampire-themed treats.
- Halloween Sprinkles: Black, orange, and purple sprinkles can make any ice cream festive and fun.
- Marshmallow Webs: Melted marshmallows can be stretched over the ice cream to resemble spider webs.
- Chocolate Shards: Dark chocolate shards can mimic bats’ wings or spooky grave markers.
These creative toppings add both flavour and visual appeal, enhancing the overall spooky vibe of your Halloween “Ice Screams.”
Trick-or-Treat Candy as Ice Cream Toppings
One of the highlights of Halloween is trick-or-treating and collecting a bag full of sweets. Instead of simply eating these treats as snacks, why not incorporate them into your homemade Halloween ice creams?
Using trick-or-treat candy as toppings adds a personal and fun touch to your desserts.
- Chocolate Bars: Chop up mini bars like Snickers or KitKats and sprinkle over ice cream for a rich, decadent treat.
- Gummy Sweets: Use gummy bears, worms, or spiders to add a chewy texture—perfect for spooky themes like graveyards.
- Candy Corn: Add this iconic candy to your ice cream for extra pops of Halloween colour and sweetness.
- Peanut Butter Cups: Crumble mini peanut butter cups over chocolate ice cream for a creamy and crunchy combo.
- M&Ms or Smarties: Colourful candy-coated chocolates bring a burst of colour and crunch to any dessert.
- Lollipops and Hard Candies: Crush them and sprinkle over ice cream to add sparkle and crunch.
- Skittles or Sour Candies: Add some zing to your sweet treats by topping them with sour or fruity sweets.
By using these treats, you bring a new level of creativity to your Halloween ice creams, making the most of both your homemade efforts and the fun of trick-or-treating.
